You do not need anything you think you need to be happy. You also do not have to wait for what you are waiting for to show up. Being happy is about enjoying what you have now. It is to be happy with and fulfilled with what you have. That’s how lucky professor Tal Ben Shahar explains it.

Tal Ben Shahar is a professor at Harvard University, now famous for his lectures on happiness. He defines happiness as “the general feeling of pleasure and meaning. A happy person enjoys positive emotions while perceiving his life as meaningful. ”

Tal Ben Shahar has a variety of theories about positive psychology and creating a happy life. Here are some of them, backed by science:

  • Eye-to-eye relationships : Interpersonal relationships with people that happen face to face (not through screens) give us pleasure that leads to happiness. When we spend time with people we love, we invest time in ourselves and our well-being.
  • Simplify things in life: sometimes we focus too much on stress. We try to do so many things so that we can be done earlier, or focus on what goes wrong to try to fix it. It’s easy to get lost in all this. Simplifying makes things easier. You know problems exist, but you have the tools to fix them. You remember that things do not always go the way, but there are always things that do. Focus on what you are doing, focus on one thing and enjoy it.
  • Physical exercise: Exercising helps to relieve tension, improve circulation and produce endorphins. Endorphins, as you probably know, promote feelings of well-being.
  • Express gratitude: being grateful and appreciating what you have makes you feel happy. Being aware of everything you have and not taking it for granted puts you on the right path to enjoyment and well-being.
  • Allow yourself to be human: we all become excited, we all have emotions and we all react to what affects us. You should feel free to express yourself without fear of what others will say. Emotional intelligence gives you the key to knowing yourself and having relationships with others.
  • Spend time on your hobbies: we all have responsibilities in our daily lives. But making time for what you really enjoy makes life full and happy. That is why time spent on what one likes should be a requirement.

According to Professor Tal Ben Shahar, one can learn to be happy. They should actually teach it in schools. To be happy is not to feel good all the time. To be happy is to know how to tolerate unpleasant feelings. It is also not to let a bad situation or bad circumstances affect your sense of fulfillment and well-being.

Tal Ben Shahar says you can learn to be happy if you know how to make good decisions. From the smallest of things that are thought to be insignificant to much larger things. Leaving the phone at home when spending time with friends, for example, or deciding to work or study.

If we can teach children from an early age about emotional intelligence, resilience, relationships and overcoming adversity, we can help them program their brains to be happy. Then they will have the ability to tackle challenges and enjoy the little things.
